Wiltshire at War Exhibition

The Call to Arms is the first of five touring displays produced by the Wiltshire at War project, which each tell a different chapter of the story of life in Wiltshire during the First World War.

This first part of the Wiltshire at War exhibition explores Wiltshire’s immediate response to the First World War through the mobilisation of troops and the development of camps and airfields all across Salisbury Plain. It presents the stories of Wiltshire people; from the men and boys who answered the first call to join up, to the regular soldiers who learned to fight a new kind of war involving digging trenches and firing mortar shells. The seven-panel display also features a touch screen showing snippets from recorded interviews with Wiltshire people talking about their family stories or personal research into Wiltshire during the Great War.
